Aurora Borealis je bila jasno vidljiva prethodna dva dana na delovima severne hemisfere planete Zemlje.
Aurora, ili polarna svetlost, nastaje kada naelektrisane čestice iz Sunčevog vetra udare u Zemljinu atmosferu u blizini polova. Te čestice sudaraju se s atomima kiseonika i azota, koji tada emituju svetlost različitih boja, najčešće zelenu, crvenu ili ljubičastu. Ovaj fenomen se dešava jer Zemljino magnetno polje usmerava čestice ka polarnim oblastima, stvarajući svetleće zavese na nebu.
Aurora ponekad zahvati južnije delove severne hemisfere kada dođe do snažnih solarnih oluja, odnosno pojačanog izbacivanja čestica sa Sunca (koronalni izbacaji mase). Tada se Zemljino magnetno polje „rastegne“ i poremeti, pa se auroralni pojas privremeno širi prema ekvatoru. Zbog toga se polarna svetlost može videti i u zemljama gde je inače retka, poput Nemačke, Francuske ili čak severa Srbije, što je i ovoga puta bio slučaj.
